Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic concern. For some people, enlarged or bulging veins may be associated with aching, heaviness, swelling, cramping, itching, or other symptoms of venous insufficiency. Getting the right diagnosis is an important first step toward understanding what is causing your symptoms and which treatment options may be appropriate.
In Cleveland, Tennessee, board-certified General Surgeon and varicose vein specialist Dr. Eston Wenger evaluates and treats patients with varicose veins and other vein concerns at Premier Surgical Cleveland.
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that most often appear in the legs. They can develop when valves inside the veins do not function properly, allowing blood to flow backward and pool instead of moving efficiently toward the heart.
Some people primarily notice visible veins, while others experience varicose vein symptoms such as:
- Aching or throbbing legs
- Leg heaviness or fatigue
- Swelling in the legs or ankles
- Cramping
- Burning or itching
- Skin discoloration
- Prominent or bulging veins
These symptoms can help your physician determine whether an underlying vein problem may be present.
How Are Varicose Veins Diagnosed?
Diagnosing varicose veins usually begins with a physical examination and a review of your symptoms and medical history.
During an initial vein evaluation, Dr. Wenger examines the legs and ankles while the patient is standing. This position makes it easier to identify bulging veins, swelling, and changes in skin color that may be associated with venous disease.
He will also ask about symptoms such as aching, cramping, swelling, heaviness, or discomfort, along with factors that may affect vein health, including previous blood clots and family history.
What Is a Venous Duplex Ultrasound?
In some cases, Dr. Wenger may recommend a venous duplex ultrasound to learn more about how your blood is moving through the veins.
This painless, noninvasive test uses sound waves to create images of the blood vessels and assess blood flow. It can help identify damaged vein valves, abnormal backward blood flow, or possible blood clots.
The results of the examination and ultrasound can provide important information for developing an individualized treatment plan.
Do All Varicose Veins Need Treatment?
Not every patient with visible varicose veins needs a procedure. The appropriate approach depends on your symptoms, examination findings, ultrasound results, and overall health.
Treatment may begin with conservative measures such as compression therapy, exercise, lifestyle changes, or leg elevation. When additional treatment is appropriate, Dr. Wenger offers minimally invasive options including sclerotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, Varithena®, VenaSeal™, and microphlebectomy.
